If you want to buy Jade jewellery, this is definitely the place to do it. We visit the main street where there are many dealers, shops and brokers. Once again this is a Burma border town, but for some reason more Jade passes through here than Mae Sai. There is also the Rim Moei Market 5km out of town that sits right on the Burma border. There are quite a few stalls with Jade and jewellery but it is packaged food, clothing and souvenirs that predominate. We eat at Japanese/ Thai restaurant and you can watch them make your sushi on demand!
One of the main draws of Mae Sod is its jade market, which is said to be the best in Thailand. Here you can find all sorts of jade carvings, jewelry, and raw jade. The market is located down the main street, and there are around 40 dealers selling sapphires, rubies, and other gems as well. Mae Sod sometimes has great deals on star Sapphires from Myanmar.
Aside from the jade market, Mae Sod has an extensive general shopping market at the border, which is worth exploring for its unique items. And for foodies, there’s an incredible outdoor market where you can find authentic Thai cuisine.
Mae Sod is also known for its unique blend of Burmese and Thai culture, which can be seen in its architecture, cuisine, and people. It’s a fascinating destination for cultural exploration.
To get to Mae Sod, we take a 50-minute flight from Bangkok on a small plane that only seats 80 passengers. The flight is at a low altitude, so you can enjoy scenic views of the countryside along the way.
There is also a gem market down the main street, with about 40 dealers. You can expect to find Sapphire, Ruby and an array of Jewellery. There is also an extensive general shopping market at the border. They had an awesome range of sweets, some not so good, my favourite is the mini peanut slabs.
We eat at a fabulous outdoor market and the food is totally authentic. You’ll also enjoy the fact that we are the only foreigner’s in town!

History of Mae Sot
History of Mae SotMae Sot, located in western Thailand, has a rich history that spans several decades. The town was established as a municipality on September 30, 1939, and initially governed 27 villages. Over time, Mae Sot grew in significance and was upgraded to a city municipality in 2010. One of the notable developments in the area was the opening of the Thai–Myanmar Friendship Bridge in 1997, connecting Mae Sot with the town of Myawaddy across the Moei River.
The district of Mae Sot shares a border with Myanmar to the west and has played a pivotal role as a trade hub in the region. It has a substantial population of Burmese migrants and has been a base for Burmese refugees for many years. Mae Sot’s proximity to the long-standing Karen ethnic insurgency in Myanmar has made it a town of refuge, attracting aid workers, exiles, and rebels.
Historically, Mae Sot was founded in 1834 by Hsai Hseng, a Shan prince. Originally named Mae La Noi, meaning “Small Forest,” the town gradually evolved into a thriving center of commerce and economic activity. Over the years, it has experienced significant growth, transforming from a backwater opium trading town to a bustling trade and business destination.
Today, Mae Sot serves as the gateway to Myanmar from Thailand’s easternmost point. It holds importance as a trade center and is particularly renowned for its jade and gem trade.
