Just over an hour’s flight north of Bangkok is the second largest city in Thailand. There are very limited shopping options for gemstones, but loads of options for everything else. Located 300m above sea level, Chiang Mai has a cooler climate and is a joy to walk around. It is an ancient walled city, established over 700 years ago, with many historical features to see. It also has the most amazing nightlife full of restaurants, food courts and bars. We usually eat at one of three night markets which all have stalls spread along the street front. This truly is a place to relax and enjoy. Daytime activities are more limited, you can visit an Elephant Sanctuary, catch a movie or visit the Zoo. Chiang Mai, meaning “New City” in Thai, has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1296 by King Mangrai. It was established as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, succeeding the former capital of Chiang Rai. King Mangrai intended for Chiang Mai to be the political, economic, social, and cultural center of his newly expanded kingdom, known as the “Lanna Kingdom” or the “kingdom of a million rice fields.” The city’s location played a strategic role in trade and commerce, contributing to its growth and prosperity over the centuries.

History

Chiang Mai served as the capital of the Lanna Thai kingdom until 1558 when it was captured by the Burmese. The city has seen various influences throughout its history, including influences from the Mon, Khmer, and Burmese cultures. It was a prominent center for trade, particularly in teak, silk, and opium, and was known for its vibrant river port and bustling markets.

Opium

Opium has played a significant role in the history of Chiang Mai and the surrounding region. During the 19th and 20th centuries, Chiang Mai was a major center for opium production and trade. The Golden Triangle, which encompasses parts of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos, was notorious for opium production, and Chiang Mai served as a hub for this illicit trade.

The cultivation of opium in the region can be traced back to the 18th century, with small-scale production in Myanmar (then known as Burma) primarily catering to foreign consumption. However, the opium trade expanded significantly during the 19th century, with Chiang Mai becoming a base for highland development programs and attracting prominent drug traffickers.

Opium production in Chiang Mai and the Golden Triangle thrived due to various factors, including favorable climatic conditions, the presence of ethnic minority groups involved in cultivation, and the demand from international markets. The opium trade in the region reached its peak during the mid-20th century when it supplied opium and heroin to the US forces during the Vietnam War and the domestic US market.

The Thai government took measures to combat the opium trade and address drug-related issues. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Thai government implemented various initiatives to reduce opium production, including crop substitution programs and alternative livelihood projects for opium farmers. These efforts resulted in a decline in opium cultivation in the region.

Today, Chiang Mai’s opium history is acknowledged through various museums and exhibits, such as the Hall of Opium in the Golden Triangle Park, which provides insights into the history, culture, and impact of the opium trade. It serves as a reminder of the region’s past and the ongoing efforts to address drug-related issues.

The city of Chiang Mai flourished under the patronage of its rulers, and numerous impressive temples and monuments were built during this time. The city’s cultural landscape is adorned with magnificent Buddhist temples, such as Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, and Wat Chiang Man, which are important historical and architectural landmarks.
